In and around Khandbari

Khandbari, the district headquarters of Sankhuwasabha, is a cool mix of cultural vibes and modern touches. Tucked away in the beautiful Arun Valley, this hilly town is famous for its lush scenery, traditional charm, and friendly locals.

Sitting at about 1,100 meters up, it’s surrounded by green hills and impressive peaks, including views of the stunning Makalu Range. This peaceful spot makes Khandbari a great place for anyone looking to soak in nature and get a taste of rural life in Nepal.

Khandbari is the starting point for stunning treks, and a base for many hydropower projects.

The nearby Arun River adds to the charm, making the area even more picturesque. As a key starting point for trekking in the Makalu region, Khandbari attracts adventure lovers and nature fans eager to tackle the Makalu Base Camp trek, known for its rich biodiversity, beautiful forests, and breathtaking Himalayan views. Visitors can enjoy a nice mix of modern comforts and rustic charm, with some good hotels and resorts popping up to accommodate the growing number of travelers.

Khandbari also serves as a hub for various hydropower projects, as Sankhuwasabha ranks among the richest districts in Nepal in terms of water resources. The 900 MW Arun 3 hydropower project, currently under construction here, is nearing completion. Several rivers in the area, including the Arun, Sabha, Sankhuwa, Piluwa, Hewa, Apsuwa, Isuwa, and Chhujung, have been identified as having high potential for hydropower development. Numerous projects on these rivers are either in the survey phase or already under construction.

Every Saturday, the lively haat bazaar comes alive, where locals gather to buy, sell, and catch up. It’s the perfect spot for travelers to dive into local culture, pick up traditional goods, and taste some authentic cuisine. Even though Khandbari is becoming more popular, its infrastructure, including the Koshi Highway, has had its ups and downs, with some roads needing a bit of upgrade.

In Khandbari, history, culture, and natural beauty come together beautifully. Whether you’re an adventurer ready to explore the Himalayas, a culture buff wanting to soak up local traditions, or just someone looking for a peaceful getaway, Khandbari has a warm, genuine vibe waiting for you. Strolling through its streets, chatting with the locals, and taking in the stunning views, you’ll really get a feel for the essence of this enchanting Nepali town.
